Can a phone really handle deep strategy?
For a long time I assumed strategy needed a mouse and a big screen. Playing Harbor Tycoon changed my mind. Turns out a lot of strategy is thinking, and your thumb is perfectly capable of executing a plan you've already worked out in your head.
The pause-and-plan style suits mobile especially well. You can study a bottleneck on a bus, make one decision, and lock the phone again. Games that force split-second action struggle, but slower, thoughtful ones thrive.
The main thing to look for is readable screens. A great phone strategy game shows you what matters without burying it in tiny icons. Harbor Tycoon keeps its numbers clean, and that's half the reason it works.
Don't sleep on the genre just because the screen is small. Some of the most engrossing offline sessions I've had this year came from a port I kept trying to optimize one more time.
