Puzzle games that don't waste your time

There's a difference between a puzzle that makes you feel smart and one that makes you feel cheated. The good ones give you everything you need to solve them; the bad ones hide the answer and call it difficulty.

Lantern Hollow is our go-to example of fair design. Every solution in it comes from paying attention, not from pixel-hunting or wild guessing. When you crack a room, it clicks because the clues were there all along.

Our test is simple: if you're stuck, ask yourself whether the game gave you a chance. In a well-made puzzle, the answer is almost always yes. If you have to resort to a guide for something that had no logical hint, that's a design failure, not your fault.

Offline is a natural fit for the genre too. Puzzles want calm and focus, and there's nothing calmer than a phone that can't buzz with notifications because it's in airplane mode.
